Waqas Samad

Waqas Samad is Chief Executive Officer of Lloyd's List Intelligence, where he is leading the company's global expansion and innovation agenda as the maritime sector undergoes rapid transformation. He brings over three decades of international experience at the intersection of finance, data and technology. Before joining Lloyd's List Intelligence, Waqas held senior leadership roles at London Stock Exchange Group, including as CEO of FTSE Russell and a member of the Group's Executive Committee, and previously served as CEO of Barclays Risk Analytics and Index Solutions.

Patrick Cheung
Partner, HKW

Patrick is a Partner in HFW’s Shipping team, based in Hong Kong. Patrick has extensive experience in non-contentious work, covering a wide spectrum with special emphasis on the relevant industry sectors including shipping (sale and purchase, registration and shipbuilding), finance (shipping, aviation, other asset and general finance), aviation (registration, management and operation agreements, MRO contracts, joint ventures), corporate and commercial, regulatory and competition and travel, cruise and leisure.

Patrick advises key participants in the relevant industry sectors, including owners, builders, banks, leasing companies, commercial operators, brokers, managers, technical service providers and professional investors. He also advises multinational companies, located in Hong Kong, Mainland China and internationally.

Ranked and recommended in Chambers Asia Pacific 2025 for Shipping Finance, Patrick is also recognised by the Legal 500 Asia-Pacific 2025 guide for his work in Asset Finance.

Patrick speaks English, Putonghua, Cantonese and Hokkien and has made presentations in Mainland China, Hong Kong and Europe on topics relevant to the relevant industry sectors.

Patrick is qualified in New South Wales (Australia), Hong Kong, England and Wales.

Raluca Popa
Head of Global Trade Solutions, Commercial Banking, Hong Kong, HSBC

Raluca Popa is the Head of Global Trade Solutions for HSBC Hong Kong. She leads a team of 150 colleagues covering structured trade, import and export finance, supply chain financing, and factoring solutions. Prior to her current role, she has extensive corporate banking and credit risk experience in Shanghai, UK, US, and Mexico covering M&As, LBOs, Renewables, and Infrastructure project finance. She led diverse teams across various corporate sectors including Automobiles, Manufacturing and Consumer Goods. She was awarded the International Banker of the Year Award by Euromoney Mexico for her work in building HSBC’s international franchise proposition in the country.

She is a part-time lecturer in Structured Lending Products with Paris-Dauphine/ Stanford University, her alma mater, and she is a mentor for Young Entrepreneur Accelerator Programme.

In her free time, she enjoys sports and spending time with her husband and 2 boys.

Thilo Jahn
Partner, HFW

Thilo specialises in commercial shipping and commodity dispute resolution, in particular disputes arising under commodity contracts, charterparties, bills of lading as well as offshore and shipbuilding contracts.

Before moving to Asia in 2016 Thilo spent five years practising as a solicitor in London having gained extensive experience in both court litigation and international arbitration acting for shipping companies and trading houses. Thilo runs cases in all of his areas of expertise in the High Court as well as major arbitration forums such as, for example, the LMAA, HKIAC, FOSFA and the London Sugar Association.

Thilo is ranked as a Leading Individual in Chambers & Partners UK, 2017.

Thilo is a qualified lawyer in England and Wales and is a native German speaker.
